FIELDWORK OR A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS

Fieldwork or as it commonly known as internship or summer training is always a unique experience for a professional course's student. It is the most demanding component of any professional course. The learnability is always high as a student who has been used to the vagaries of college life is exposed to the professional world. We get to understand the professional demeanor and try to emulate it in our persona.

Like every other student i have had my share of learning during my bachelors internships and a couple of months experience at an international BPO as a CCE.

Well, like the last couple of training opportunities, i was excited to begin my work, learn and meet new people.

Hey,Don't get any wrong ideas about my first day at fieldwork, my professionalism ended the moment i left the vicinity of my house on my bike with my overtly over enthusiastic friend, Danish.

All dressed up in formals, the moment we rode few kilometers , it begin to rain like anything. Imagine my luck, it was sweating hot for the last couple of days and the moment i was dressing up the clouds came to know that it's the time to rain. So like any other biker on Mathura Road, i couldn't find any place to save myself, unlike Danish who took refuge behind me and saved himself upto a large extent from getting wet. Bhai, banda mujhse double height ka hai tabhi apne aap ko mere peeche chupane me succesful raha. i was soaking wet and we still had around 15 kilometers to cover. Riding being the only option, i sped like anything in lowered visibility, the sooner we reached the lesser we would get wet, as i thought, which i realised made the situation worse.

The corporate office of NuChem ltd ( the company we had to stay put for the next 10 days) was located on the main road, but had a very small gate. So as my luck is always on my side, i rode past the company in the most incessant rain that i saw in this season. After around 5 kilometers, i realized that we had entered Ballabgarh. And, i should mention that Danish and I visited the company few days back. Yaar, ek toh banda waisse hi bheeg gaya hai upar se neeche tak, aur company ghayab ho gayi hai. So taking a U turn was the only option. So we finally reached the company, completely drenched. Now, we were made to sit at the reception for around two and half hours as VP HR was engaged in a meeting. The reception was air conditioned and i was completely soaked, Danish bhi bheega tha, but utna nahin, saari baarish toh humne chhatti pe li, isse dosti kehte hain!!!!!.Now the combination of my soaked clothes and the cool breeze in the reception made me wanna go to the loo, not once, not twice but thrice. Finally, i managed to dry myself to a certain extent.

Now, we were called by the Secretary of the VP, Mrs. Thomas, she always has a refreshing smile on her face. She told us that we had to go the manufacturing plant located around 7 km from the plant. She gave us the details and explained the directions quite accurately, which really helped us reaching there in no time. Finally something good!!!!!!. Also by that time the rain had stopped. We reached the company and parked my bike outside the premises of the company as we were not sure that there was a parking inside.

We met the Sr.Manager ( P&A), C.M.Biala, who introduced us to his subordinate Bharadwaj Ji, whom we were supposed to report. Bharadwaj ji is one of those persons who is always busy and does not have a second to spare, but made sure that we were comfortable and introduced us to the place. He was dear enough to take us to the canteen and tell the cashier cum waiter cum cook, " Mundya nu khana khilao, paisse mat lena aaj, kal se le lena". The canteen was quite shabby, but the food was awsome, ghar ke khane ki yaad aagayi. so we had our food in the staff section and met couple of senior employees, and i must say, they were quite friendly. After having our meal, we went back to Bharadwaj ji, who was quite busy yelling on phone. Company ke gate taak toh unki awaaz jati hai, but he was quite polite and cooperative with us. He asked couple of things about our background and as soon as he realised that i am from agra( ancestrally ), woh toh apne bidu ban gaye, he was from kosi. unhone pharmaya, phir toh tum logon ko meri bhasha se koi problem nahin hogi. His language gets extremely civilized when he is frustrated.

After a few mins, he took us to the time office and introduced us to virender Ji, incharge. Like everyone else in the company, he was really busy, but we knew how to sweet talk him. Bas ek baar joh todha maska maara , baande ne joh batana shuru kiya hai, 3 din ki information 3 ghante mein de di. Finally things were falling in place.

And did i mention that i had to go to the loo thrice in the factory, which was the most obnoxious and stinking place i had ever seen, with a liquid soap which cleaned your hands but added a novel smell to it. I nearly puked each time i went there. Kya karein thand laag rahi thi, jaana toh pada hi.

Finally, it was time to leave and we bid adieu to everyone. As we came out, it began to pour again with even greater force from the morning. And to our horror someone punctured our bike. No repair shop in sight. We fortunately got hold of the office peon, Gopi, and asked him where can we find a repair shop? He gave us directions and after dragging my bike for 15 mins in the torrential rains ( it appeared torrential enough for me )we reached the place , only to find that it was a bicycle repair shop. Yaaaaaar, Gopi ji ne toh apne level ki baat kardi. With no other option we searched for the repair shop for the next 20 mins and finally happened to find one. Well, we got the damn thing repaired as we stood in the open getting wet. Chalo ab ghar chala jaye , and we reached my home.
After all, we had another day ahead which was filled with the same combination of tragedy and comedy..........................
